Ancient recovery tiles: art and history

When building interventions are carried out, the possibility of renovating an old roof may arise, it can happen for a house or a historic building to be restored, up to situations of building recovery.

When you are renovating a roof it is possible to replace some tiles. With the old it is possible to invent new things. You will say: old recycled tiles? More or less!  

With the tiles aged it is possible, for example, to design small flower beds or flower pots, or to paint them and use them as purely decorative elements.

The roof is not just a part of a house but a real part of architecture and as such its shape and type of structure depend on many factors, both technological and cultural.

The bearing structure of the roofs consists of 2 structural elements:

• the first is the large frame, which forms the main part;
• Then there is the small warping made up of joists and stringers placed, which support the roofing material.

I recovery tiles in terracotta it is a very ancient building material, together with terracotta bricks, which we still use today.

This element comes from the very ancient Etruscan and Roman tradition of processing and typology of firing of clay for the creation of versatile and resistant materials for building.

Terracotta roof tiles are still today a valid choice for covering pitched roofs: in Italy but above all in central Italy, in the heart of the country, it is almost traditional for the roof to be covered with roof tiles and/or alternating of tiles and pantiles.

But the tile is not only seen as a 'useful' element but is also used in a wholly creative way to give life to small made-in-house works or particular and special decorations. 

Furthermore, the tile can be used as a cover for the light bulb and is positioned on the wall using special hooks or brackets, but better if detached from the wall so as to allow a better diffusion of light;

or the tiles can be used as decorations to hang on the walls; finally, as fences for flower beds in the garden, to delimit small areas: positioned one on top of the other, or inserted into the ground, even alternating just like on roofs, the tiles give a wonderful scenic effect.
