Furniture Restoration: Essential Processes and Curiosities

Restoration of Antique Furniture

The first step in restoring antique furniture is to remove all hinges and metal pieces, which should be cleaned separately with appropriate products available in the market. Care must be taken to preserve and reuse the original screws during reassembly to maintain the integrity of the furniture.

If the furniture is particularly dirty, a thorough wash using warm water and ammonia is recommended. Once it's completely dry, any existing layers of paint can be removed. After bringing the wood back to its natural appearance, it's essential to repair any damage due to age and neglect.

For this, there are products in the market, like epoxies and wood fillers;, which need to be shaped onto the furniture piece and, once hardened, sanded; down to blend with the rest of the surface.

The Restoration Finish

The first step in finishing is sanding using fine-grit sandpaper to remove any raised wood fibers resulting from stripping and washing.

For an antique charm, traditional products like shellac or wax are preferred for a shiny or polished finish.

Cleaning: The First Step in Antique Furniture Restoration

Cleaning is the first and crucial step in restoring antique wooden furniture.

Any intervention must be gentle and sensitive to the wood's nature, using the right products and tools. If the furniture's structure is sound and the surface coloration is intact, a simple cleaning with a sponge and mild soap solution is sufficient. If the dirt is deeply ingrained, gently rub the entire piece with a soft cloth soaked in a mixture of ethyl alcohol, pumice powder, and linseed oil.

Remedying Stains on Antique Furniture

Accidental spills on wooden furniture, especially antiques, can cause significant stains. For sugary liquid stains, wash the area with hot water and dry thoroughly.

If the stain has solidified, gently rub it with fine-grit sandpaper or very fine steel wool, then polish with wood balm or shellac

For white stains caused by alcohol, heat, or moisture, rub the area with a pad soaked in a 50% solution of turpentine and white spirit. If stains persist, repeat or use fine steel wool or sandpaper.

The Aging Process of Furniture

The wood aging process not only gives an antique patina to the piece but also serves as a finish. After sanding the wood, dilute catramina in turpentine to create a dense liquid to brush on all wood surfaces. Let it act for 10 minutes, then remove excess with a cloth, applying more force on accessible surfaces and less on corners and intricate details. This simulates wear and cleaning over time, as antique furniture tends to darken in hard-to-reach areas.

After the catramina driesrefine the shades using fine steel wool. Finally, dissolve beeswax flakes in turpentine and proceed with the final polishing.
